Internships and Clerkships
The Northeast Iowa Family Medicine Residency program is proud to offer invaluable opportunities to medical students interested in family medicine. Below are some of the things we would be pleased to share with you:
Family Medicine Clerkship (3rd year) and Family Medicine Elective Clerkship (4th year)
Our supportive medical staff will work with you one-on-one, teaching clinical and technical skills, as well as evidence-based medicine. For many students, a family medicine clerkship reaffirms their decision to be a family physician. There is no better way to get hands-on experience while under the guidance of physicians dedicated to teaching!
Sub-Internship (4th year)
Instead of being just a student following along with our Family Practice Inpatient team —participate as a valuable member! As a Sub-I, you will follow patients from admission through discharge, make the initial assessment, write progress notes and dictate discharge summaries. You’ll enhance your evaluation and communication skills presenting patients at morning teaching sessions. You will also have the opportunity to participate in OB deliveries.
Elective Sub-Specialties
We can be your connection to elective rotations in a variety of sub-specialties including (but not limited to): Otolaryngology (Ear/Nose/Throat), Pain Management, Ophthalmology, and Rheumatology.
Regardless of the type of clerkship you have with us or an area preceptor, you will gain invaluable insight from attending our weekly didactic conferences held at the residency every Wednesday afternoon.
Free housing is available, which includes a private room, internet access and dedicated terminals, use of Covenant Medical Center’s Wellness Center (free of charge), and free meals at the hospital.
Visiting Day
We welcome the opportunity to meet you and encourage you to stop in anytime you are in the area. Better yet, why not set up a “Visiting Day” which is a designated time typically between 2-4 hours in length that has been specifically tailored and coordinated to meet your desires on what you’d like to see and learn about our progam. Suggested activities during the designated time include: tour the area hospitals and/or attend sit-down rounds, tour the FPC clinic, attend Wednesday conferences, and/or luncheon with a resident host.
